Quick Start

Quick Start

Typefu lives in the menu bar. Everything else happens in the app you're typing in, so you never have to switch windows.

1. Grant Accessibility access

Typefu needs Accessibility access to insert text, read selected text and detect abbreviations.

  1. Open Typefu. The Welcome window walks you through it.
  2. Click to open System Settings ▸ Privacy & Security ▸ Accessibility.
  3. Turn on Typefu.

You can check this later in Settings ▸ Permissions. Microphone access is only needed if you use Dictation.

2. Make your first snippet

  1. Click the menu bar icon and choose Open Library (⌘L).
  2. Click New Snippet.
  3. Give it a name, for example Signature.
  4. Type the text in the editor.
  5. Add an abbreviation, for example ;sig.

3. Use it

There are three ways to insert a snippet:

  • Abbreviation: Type ;sig in any app. Typefu replaces it with the snippet.
  • Launcher: Press ⌃⌥Space, type a few letters of the name, press Return.
  • Suggestions: Type ; and a few letters. Matching snippets show at the caret. Use ↑ ↓ and press Return or Tab.

4. Try the action menu

Select some text with the mouse. A menu of actions shows up next to it. Try Proofread, Translate, or open the Transform group to change the case.

See Action Menu for every action.

5. Add a field

Click Insert Token in the snippet editor and pick Text. Typefu adds this to your snippet:

Hi {text name="Name"},

Next time you insert it, a small form asks for the name first. See Tokens and Fields for every kind of field.

The main window

The Library window has three panes: the sidebar, the list, and the editor for the selected item.

  • Home: Your most used snippets and a quick overview.
  • Snippets: All Snippets, Favorites and your folders.
  • Actions: Your own actions, Menu Layout, Menu Behavior and AI Presets.
  • Expander: How abbreviations expand as you type.
  • Tags: Snippets grouped by tag.
  • Building Blocks: Lists, Pipes and Date Formats you reuse across snippets.
  • Settings: General, Ignored Apps, AI Providers, Dictation, Shortcuts, Permissions, License and Support.
