Snippets

A snippet is text you insert often: a signature, an address, a support reply, a code block. Snippets can be plain text, or templates with fields you fill in when you insert them.

Create a snippet

  1. Open the Library (⌘L from the menu bar icon).
  2. Click New Snippet.
  3. Fill in the header:
    • Name: What you search for in the launcher.
    • Folder: Optional. Folders show in the sidebar under Snippets.
    • Abbreviation: Optional, for example ;sig.
    • Tags: Optional. Tags show in the sidebar under Tags.
  4. Type the text in the editor. Click Insert Token to add fields and values.
  5. Switch to Preview to see how it renders.

You can also select text in any app and choose Save as Snippet from the action menu.

Right-click a snippet and choose Add to Favorites to find it fast. The editor also shows how many times you've used it and when.

Insert a snippet

Launcher

Press ⌃⌥Space in any app. The launcher opens without taking focus from the app you're in.

  • Type to search.
  • ↑ ↓ to move between results.
  • Return to insert.
  • ⌘Return to copy instead of inserting.
  • ⌘E to edit the snippet in the Library.
  • Esc to close.

Abbreviations

Type a snippet's abbreviation in any app and Typefu replaces it. Starting abbreviations with a character you rarely type, like ;, keeps them from firing by accident.

Change how they work in Expander in the sidebar:

  • Expand: Immediately, or after space, tab or return.
  • Keep the space, tab or return after expanding.
  • Case-sensitive: ;Sig won't expand an abbreviation saved as ;sig.
  • Match the case you type: ;SIG inserts ALL CAPS and ;Sig capitalizes the first letter.
  • Expand inside words: When off, btw only expands at the start of a word.

Abbreviations pause in password fields and while an input method is composing text.

Suggestions

Turn on Show suggestions while typing in Expander settings.

  • Type ; and a few letters to see matching snippets at the caret.
  • Type : and a few letters to see emoji, for example :thumbsup.
  • ↑ ↓ to choose, Return or Tab to insert.

Favorites and repeat

  • Show favourite snippets: A shortcut that shows your Favorites near the caret.
  • Repeat the last snippet: A shortcut that runs the last snippet again, with its form already filled in.

Set both in Settings ▸ Shortcuts.

Fill-in form

When a snippet has fields, a small form opens near the caret before inserting. The app you're typing in keeps focus.

  • Return inserts. In a multiline field, Return adds a line and ⌘Return inserts.
  • ⌃Tab jumps to the next empty field.
  • Esc cancels.

Import and export

Snippets import and export as Markdown files with a small header for the name and settings. Use Import and Export in the Library toolbar:

  • Import Markdown…
  • Export All as Markdown…
